Chapter Fifteen

The morning sun streamed into the cottage, making the new furniture glow like it was under the Living Sharpe camera lights. The shabby little cottage looked like a different place now.

“Thanks for coming by to check out the oven, Cassidy,” Lillian said.

“No problem. I’m sorry I couldn’t do anything about it. I’m not sorry I’m here, though. The pie is delicious, uneven oven heating or not. The pie committee will flip over this.”

“Wait until you taste this next one.” Lillian opened the oven and turned the pie ninety degrees. She’d been spoiled by the state-of-the-art Living Sharpe kitchen, and this situation was less than ideal, and it wasn’t only the oven setting her back. Sadly, the dishes and cookware hadn’t arrived yet, so Lillian was still having to make do with what had been left behind. At least she’d had the forethought to buy pie pans when she was in Machias.

She stretched her stiff back and yawned. She’d had another sleepless night, despite the new king-size bed, tossing and turning, wondering when she’d see Caleb again. After hearing about Ashley, she had a pretty good idea why he’d backed off after the kiss at his houseboat several days ago.

Lillian brushed the flour off her hands on her apron. “I can’t believe Roger stood me up again today,” she grumbled. “He’s a complete chicken. He called off my coming over yesterday and this morning to finish his organization project because he knows I’ll want to discuss listing some of his properties for sale.”

“You suggested land-hoarder McGuffy turn loose property?” She gave Lillian a high five.

“I did. So far, he’s not hot on the idea. I need to prove to him there is interest in the area. That’s why I need the perfect blueberry pie. If Blink wins the contest this weekend—”

“Then we get to host it next year, and loads of people will visit!” Cassidy continued, face glowing like the sunlit furniture. Her smile faded. “But there’s nothing here to visit.”

Lillian stopped scrubbing the mixing bowl and gave her a sly smile. “There will be if I can convince Roger to sell some of the property in time to make improvements before next year’s contest. Especially the empty businesses at the harbor.” She rinsed the bowl and put it in the drying rack.

“Convincing him is going to be hard. Roger’s hung on to those properties his whole life, acquiring everything he could get his hands on as businesses and families moved out.” Cassidy dried the mixing bowl and set it on the shelf next to the measuring cups.

“But why does he collect properties if he’s going to just let them sit idle? It’s like he doesn’t really want them, but he doesn’t want anyone else to have them because, God forbid…Walmart!”

Cassidy chuckled. “You nailed it. I mean, look at his main house. I’ve offered to work on it hundreds of times in the last five years. That super cool historic house needs to have some repairs before it’s lost, but he’d rather let it collapse than change or sell it.
