Chapter Fifteen
The morning sun streamed into the cottage, making the new furniture glow like it was under the Living Sharpe camera lights. The shabby little cottage looked like a different place now.
âThanks for coming by to check out the oven, Cassidy,â Lillian said.
âNo problem. Iâm sorry I couldnât do anything about it. Iâm not sorry Iâm here, though. The pie is delicious, uneven oven heating or not. The pie committee will flip over this.â
âWait until you taste this next one.â Lillian opened the oven and turned the pie ninety degrees. Sheâd been spoiled by the state-of-the-art Living Sharpe kitchen, and this situation was less than ideal, and it wasnât only the oven setting her back. Sadly, the dishes and cookware hadnât arrived yet, so Lillian was still having to make do with what had been left behind. At least sheâd had the forethought to buy pie pans when she was in Machias.
She stretched her stiff back and yawned. Sheâd had another sleepless night, despite the new king-size bed, tossing and turning, wondering when sheâd see Caleb again. After hearing about Ashley, she had a pretty good idea why heâd backed off after the kiss at his houseboat several days ago.
Lillian brushed the flour off her hands on her apron. âI canât believe Roger stood me up again today,â she grumbled. âHeâs a complete chicken. He called off my coming over yesterday and this morning to finish his organization project because he knows Iâll want to discuss listing some of his properties for sale.â
âYou suggested land-hoarder McGuffy turn loose property?â She gave Lillian a high five.
âI did. So far, heâs not hot on the idea. I need to prove to him there is interest in the area. Thatâs why I need the perfect blueberry pie. If Blink wins the contest this weekendââ
âThen we get to host it next year, and loads of people will visit!â Cassidy continued, face glowing like the sunlit furniture. Her smile faded. âBut thereâs nothing here to visit.â
Lillian stopped scrubbing the mixing bowl and gave her a sly smile. âThere will be if I can convince Roger to sell some of the property in time to make improvements before next yearâs contest. Especially the empty businesses at the harbor.â She rinsed the bowl and put it in the drying rack.
âConvincing him is going to be hard. Rogerâs hung on to those properties his whole life, acquiring everything he could get his hands on as businesses and families moved out.â Cassidy dried the mixing bowl and set it on the shelf next to the measuring cups.
âBut why does he collect properties if heâs going to just let them sit idle? Itâs like he doesnât really want them, but he doesnât want anyone else to have them because, God forbidâ¦Walmart!â
Cassidy chuckled. âYou nailed it. I mean, look at his main house. Iâve offered to work on it hundreds of times in the last five years. That super cool historic house needs to have some repairs before itâs lost, but heâd rather let it collapse than change or sell it.
